FMCSA will no longer need to recycle “MC” numbers
In early 2017 FMCSA started recycling “MC” numbers previously held by defunct for-hire carriers and assigning them to new applicants. The agency’s antiquated computer system was unable to issue MC numbers with more than 6 digits and it ran out of numbers with the issuance of MC 999999. Apparently the problem has been fixed. FMCSA is now issuing 7-digit MC numbers, and it also advised the states to make sure their computers could handle 8-digit numbers. That makes one wonder if FMCSA will still phase out MC numbers for for-hire carriers and brokers as it had previously planned.
