American Trucking Association is Protesting a Bill in Congress

The American Trucking Association is protesting a bill in Congress regarding underride guards on

trailers. The proposed bill wants underride guards to be installed on all trailers and straight trucks.

The bill also wants to strengthen current rear underride guards. ATA points out that there is "no

sufficient science, date, or demonstrated effectiveness," backing this bill. If this bill were to be

passed it would cost about $34 billion to retrofit the 12 million trailers that are currently on our

nation's roads. The labor cost alone for this idea would exceed the trucking industry's annual net

revenue.
