FMCSA allows carriers to use electronic rearview camera system

FMCSA granted its first application for carriers to use an electronic rearview camera system instead of the required two rearward facing mirrors. A 5-year exemption was given to Stoneridge, Inc. and its MirrorEye system which mounts cameras outside the truck and has monitors located inside the cab on each “A” frame between the windshield and doors. The agency approved the filing because the system has (1) a greater field of vision from traditional mirrors, (2) reduntant cameras in case one fails, (3) enhanced visual quality for night and low lighting conditions along with glare reduction, (4) trailer panning which constantly keeps the trailer end in view which can prevent turning accidents with pedestrians, bicyclists, other vehicles, and fixed objects, and (5) the potential of reducing driver fatigue by doing less head-turning to check the vehicle sides.
